My Eight Carry-On Essentials for Long-Haul Flights

My carry-on bag for those long cross-Atlantic flights has been perfected! I currently don’t work many international flights (due to my base & seniority mostly), but I do fly a lot of red-eyes and try to take as many weekend trips to Europe that I can fit in. Now with more of a routine in place, it makes those 8+ hours feel less intimidating.

Long Haul Essentials

Here is how I prepared for a red-eye or flight across the Atlantic, to say Brussels :).

Step One::: Before I head to the airport, I shower and put my hair in a braid (using Essential #5, an EMI-JAY hair tie).

Step Two::: Confirm I have my passport, and that all the essentials above are in my carry-on! I also try to pack an empty water bottle to fill at the airport.

Step 3::: Once onboard and settled, I usually like to watch one movie and then after sleep for the next 4 or 5 hours. Ask for a cup of hot water and add the Zarbee’s Night Time Drink (Essential #1). It will not only protect your throat but ease you into a nice peaceful sleep.

[ I usually struggle to get to sleep and then if I do sleep, wake with a dry and sore throat. In a perfect world, I would not sleep with my mouth open…bahaha. Luckily, I finally found something that solves my problem >>ZARBEE’S!! They also have vitamin-filled or immune support supplements! AND with great ingredients!]

Step 4::: I find it necessary to have a sleep mask (Essential #2, accompanied by eye drops). If you are near a galley or bathroom there will always be a light on, and the mask solves that dilemma.

Step 5:::  Flights arrive into Europe in the morning, so I like to hit the ground running, no time to waste! Once I wake up, I go into the restroom and take out my braid, finger comb and fluff (maybe even apply some dry-shampoo, it can be hard to find in travel size). My hair was contained in the braid for my sleep and now can be let down with a nice wave.

Step 6::: I wipe down my face with a refreshing YestoCucumbers Face Wipes (Essential #4) and reapply makeup if I’m feeling ambitious.

Step 7::: And then of course brush my teeth and use some mouthwash (Essentials #7), that always helps with waking up too. After, apply some Burt’s Bees lip balm (Essential #3, the only chapstick that I use).

Step 8::: Finally hands need some EOS hand lotion (Essential #8).

ALSO:: Drink LOTS of water! Ricola drops (Essential #6) are a soothing treat too. Lemon mint is my favorite flavor :).

Cozumel, MX – Our Sunshine Escape

I heart Cozumel. Wishing I was there writing this post and not in the cuddly 9 degree weather of Chicago. These pictures do give me some comfort. I had the awesome opportunity to go on a 5-night All-Inclusive trip with my crazy cool mom. (A couple of these pictures are taken by her :)) Ok, so your next month (or two or three) is going to consist of this: searching for flight deals and a Groupon that will take you to this gorgeous island.

Groupon has some great deals going on right now…you should totally take a peek. The Mexico, Caribbean & Latin America section is now on my “Favorites” tab on my Safari.

We were scheduled to be at the All-Inclusive Allegro Cozumel from our Groupon, but since they had a slight over-booking they upgraded us to the ‘5 Star’ –when they told us 5-star, I believe they meant to say it is of a higher quality, not that it was officially given that rating– sister resort the All-Inclusive Occidental Grand Cozumel. We were happy to make the switch! The Occidental Grand was secluded, had very lush scenery and a great beach.

Today, I am just going to share with you some pictures of the amazing water and sunsets, tomorrow I will give a better description of ways to travel around town, a few places you should stop and eat, and mini travel guide to Cozumel!

But first, I have to get you pulled in with these crazy turquoise waters and stunning horizons.

Disney World in December { Day THREE & FOUR }

Onward…to the end of the Disney adventure. Saturday and Sunday were the busiest days, Hollywood Studios seemed to be the most crowded. We were still able to go on the Tower of Terror three times and the Rock’n’Roller Coaster twice…so you can still make things happen! Universal was quiet until you entered the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. But, that was understandable, it was legit. They did such a good job with bringing those books to life.

Day 3: Hollywood Studios

Favorite Ride: Rock’n’Roller Coaster –cue “Dude (Looks Like a Lady).”

Favorite Show: Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights –happens only in December and it was incredible (see the awesome Christmas light photos below!!). Fantasmic was good too!!

Favorite Food and Drink: Our meal at the Sci-Fi Dine-In was amazing! The gourmet burger (had fried mac’n’cheese on it!!!), and an Oreo shake! Yes, that was only thing we ate that day haha. Amy ordered the Oreo shake mixed with peppermint, so it was like a Thin Mint Cookie shake…so yummy!

Favorite Dining Experience: The Sci-Fi Dine-In exceeded all my expectations. Tyler had made the reservation without telling us, to make it a surprise. And it was awesome. It was a huge drive-in movie theater where you actually had your meal delivered to “your car” and the big screen right there in front of you played old school short films and commercials.

Must-Sees: You have to peek in to see the 50’s Prime Time Cafe. They brought the 50’s to you!

Day 4: Universal Studios

Favorite Ride: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (the ride inside Hogwarts Castle). There was a long line and we were running out of time, so we went into the single riders lane and split up. I ended up going with Jake anyways, and only took about 5-10minutes. Great call, if you want to zoom through the rides.

  • Also, the Transformer 3D Ride was extremely cool and felt so real!

Favorite Food and Drink: Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade, I ordered the “Great Feast” platter which came with ribs, chicken, corn on the cob, and potatoes. Oh and of course a Butterbeer!! Holy cow was that delicious.

Must Sees: Diagon Alley Dragon breathes fire…need I say more… 😉

It’s fun to look back at our trip and see how much we were able to experience. It was a trip to remember. I was reminded that there is no rule, nothing set in stone, saying that you have to grow up…it’s okay to act like a kid and smile and enjoy life-like it is one big Magical Kingdom ;).

Happy Adventures,

Erika

Disney World in December { DAY ONE }

Hello!!! Happy New Year to everyone! I have been out of the loop this past month and a half. With being a flight attendant, the holiday season is the most hectic and busy time. Any spare moment I had during the craziness, was spent with my hubby or my family! I hope you all had a great holiday season and are starting the new year fresh and excited to conquer 2015!

One of the great adventures of 2014 came in December…Disney WORLD! This has been on Jake & I’s bucket list. We had both been to Disneyland in Los Angeles, but never the spectacular “World” of Disney. We went for 4 full days and were pretty determined to see it all. Also, our good friends Amy & Tyler were our co-conspirators for this whirlwind tour of all things Disney–you will see them sprinkled throughout the pictures below.

Day 1: The Magic Kingdom

Favorite Ride: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Favorite Show: Carousel of Progress

Favorite Food or Drink: Gaston’s Tavern, LeFou’s Brew (tastes like a frozen fruity cream soda with a delicious marshmallow flavored cream froth!) Sweet & yummy!!!

Our Awesome Dining Experience : Be Our Guest (in Beast’s Castle)

Must Sees: Cinderella’s Castle at Night (no brainer ;))

Other Tips & Suggestions:

  • If you are not staying at a Disney Hotel, still get the Disney Magic Bands (they really come in handy and are so easy with the Disney App and Fast Passes). We actually bought them in the MCO airport Disney store when we arrived. They synced them right there!
  • Tyler was our Fast Pass guru. We hardly waited in a single line and it was awesome! Make sure you prepare your three selections beforehand on the App or on the website. And continue to update them!
  • There are some pretty awesome corn dog nuggets at Casey’s Corner on Main Street…great nibble food :).
  • You don’t have to have a huge full-course meal at Be Our Guest (or any of the restaurants that need reservations). It’s great just to have some champagne and appetizers and soak up the atmosphere.
  • Also–if you can’t get a reservation online, the morning of the day you want to go–walk up to the entrance of the restaurant, they should have someone there making a limited number of ‘day-of’ reservations. They fill up quickly!

Stay tuned for more pictures and tips! Tomorrow is Day 2: Animal Kingdom & EPCOT.

Happy Adventures,

Erika

Packing for a Summer Weekend Getaway

Jacob and I have had a quiet a few weekend getaways lately, mostly for weddings, but sometimes to visit family or for work. I learn something new every time I pack…some of my recent discoveries:

1::: I sometimes need two outfits for one day.

2::: I might change my mind if I like an outfit after I have arrived at my destination.

3::: I really don’t need four pairs of shoes…aka half my carry-on is shoes.

I have tried implementing the following things to compensate for those faults:

1::: Bring an extra dress, top or layer (that can easily be rolled up or not take too much space in your carry-on).

2:::Make sure you have some classic basics before you start with the outfits that you are unsure of. Or just don’t pack the “iffy” ones at all.

3:::Bring a pair of dressier sandals/heels and comfy sandals. Even while traveling, I know I will want to exercise, but maybe set the running shoes aside to save space and opt for a beach yoga workout, SUP, or kayaking for the weekend’s activity….something you don’t need shoes! ~also running on the beach barefoot is a serious workout~

::A lot of times I might pack my running shoes but wear my dressier sandals for the flight to conserve space.::: (Like in the picture below I might also wear the floppy hat and carry the market tote bag as my second item I’m allowed to carry-on. This just might mean you have more space in your carry-on for things to bring back from your vacation, not to just pack more unnecessary things.)

With the items below (3 tops, 2 bottoms, 2 dresses and 2 shoes), you could have at least 8 outfits!
